Bushfires and your water supply
10 Jan 2020
In light of the devastating bushfires burning in the north east and east of the state, we’re reminding customers in rural and fire-prone areas to consider independent water supplies when developing their fire plans.
While there has been fire activity in our region, we have been fortunate to mostly avoid the unprecedented bushfires confronting much of the state. But there is still a long way to go this fire season.
While we are prepared for bushfire emergencies, we can’t guarantee supply, pressure or quality during (or following) a fire due to things like power outages, damage to assets and equipment, the ability to access high risk fire areas and extreme system supply demands during firefighting efforts. Depending on conditions, we may not be able to safely access water supplies or respond to system failures.
When preparing you fire plan, consider an independent water supply (such as a dam water, tanks, drums, troughs, etc.) and also consider a non-electrical pump as electricity supply is not guaranteed during a bushfire but also be mindful of the risks associated with flammable fuels.
On high fire risk days, keep a supply of drinking water (for instance jugs of water in your fridge) and stay hydrated.
Our thoughts go out to the families devastated by fires in the north east and east of the state and we acknowledge the dedication of volunteer firefighters and emergency services.
