Digital meters help us find leaks

How digital meters help fix leaks.

In the past there have only been a few ways of locating leaks in the network. A customer might tell us they suspect they have a leak after receiving an unexpectedly large bill or a member of the public my alert us after seeing an obvious leak in public.

Finding and fixing leaks early saves bucket loads of water. Digital meters in combination with other devices help Barwon Water map the flow of water in our networks by measuring variations in water pressure, usage and vibrations throughout our network.

Finding and fixing network leaks

Historically, finding and fixing network leaks required disruptive investigations often involving physically inspecting stormwater outlets, walking the mains or shutting down the water supply in zoned outages, to check tapping points and meters manually.

Digital meters help us find leaks before they become critical issues. Making network servicing and maintenance more efficient and saving billions of litres of water.

Early leak alerts

With digital meters we can alert customers when we suspect a leak is on their property. Catching potential leaks early means you can save money and avoid the stress of dealing with an unexpectedly large bill.

Thanks to early leak alert trials in 2020-2025, customers in Birregurra and Marengo saved a combined 45 million litres of water representing a customer bill value of over $97,000.

Measure your use daily

How much water do you use every day? It can be surprising to learn how much water you're using in a day. For example, the average shower will use a full bucket load of water every minute. Whereas if you're watering the garden, running the dishwasher or washing machine. It’s often hard to judge.
