New interactive art space, the ‘Museum of Modern (f)Art’, to open

29 Oct 2024

We’re celebrating Geelong Design Week by opening our own fun, free and family-friendly pop-up activity zone.

Dubbed the Museum of Modern (f)Art, the dynamic and interactive space in central Geelong will both entertain and educate visitors.

The Museum of Modern (f)Art is housed in the former café space at the base of our Ryrie Street building.

Visitors of all ages will come face-to-face with a gigantic life-size sewer blockage, called a ‘fatberg’, and be able to add their own touches to the reproduction.

We don’t want fatbergs to form underground, but we’d love you to come and contribute to the replica in our Museum of Modern (f)Art.

Created by Norlane-based The Indirect Object, the large-scale 3-D art piece is designed to show how enormous and grotesque fatbergs can be, when items that should not be flushed down the loo or washed down the drain come together.

Reactive sewer blockages cost Barwon Water about $600,000 per year, largely due to products like non-flushable wipes, sanitary items, food scraps, fats and oils clogging the system.

As part of our screening process, we remove 28 tonnes of rubbish from our sewer system each month - equivalent to the weight of six elephants.

The Museum of Modern (f)Art will also host a range of other attractions, providing an immersive experience.

Among these is the interactive activities that recently proved a hit at the Geelong Show.

Designed and created by renowned artist Callum Preston, the colourful installations bring the region’s underground sewerage and wastewater system to life.

The Museum of Modern (f)Art will be open daily from 10am to 2pm throughout Geelong Design Week.

Doors to the display can be accessed via the Aitchison Place entrance.

Bookings are not required for families or small groups, but schools are encouraged to make a booking by emailing education@barwonwater.vic.gov.au
