Drinking water is safe in Apollo Bay
06 Sep 2020
Following the Department of Health and Human Services announcement on 5 September that fragments of coronavirus (COVID-19) have been detected in the Apollo Bay sewerage system, Barwon Water would like to reassure all customers in Apollo Bay that the drinking water is unquestionably safe to drink.
Sewage treated at the Apollo Bay sewerage treatment plant is done in accordance with relevant guidelines and standards to protect public health and the environment. Wastewater (sewage) is treated to kill a wide variety of micro-organisms, including viruses, before it is returned to the environment. Treated and disinfected sewage is known as recycled water and in the case of Apollo Bay, this recycled water is discharged to the ocean.
There is no evidence that coronavirus is transmissible via sewerage systems.
