City-first initiative to see flora and fauna flourish

20 May 2025

Barwon Water’s former depot site in South Geelong is becoming a haven for wildlife.

We’re planning a mixed-use redevelopment at the 1.2-hectare site, on Lonsdale Street, in line with the Victorian Government’s plan to improve housing supply and affordability.

Ahead of this redevelopment, we’re undertaking initiatives that temporarily activate the area.

General Manager Planning, Delivery and Environment Seamus Butcher said Barwon Water was excited to partner with Geelong Gardens for Wildlife and Tract to create the Geelong Pollinator Garden.

“This demonstration garden is a fantastic way to beautify the area, ahead of the longer-term mixed-use redevelopment of the site,” he said.

The city-first demonstration garden was recently planted and assembled.

It features dense and layered planting of species that together flower all year round, and elements like logs and rocks for habitat, to support an array of wildlife.

The garden has been supported by GenU Community Nurseries and the City of Greater Geelong.

This initiative comes as we’re seeking expressions of interest from potential developers of the Barwon Water site through a multi-step EOI process.

We’re keen to receive proposals that will deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the local area and wider community.

The Pollinator Garden will eventually be replaced with more extensive public realm improvements that form part of the precinct redevelopment.
