Annual grants program supports community projects

06 Feb 2025

Barwon Water’s annual Community Grants program supports the region’s social, economic, environmental and cultural prosperity. All these forms of prosperity are underpinned by water.

Applications are now invited for the grants, with funding from $500 through to $5000 available to help bring the ideas of community groups, sports clubs and event organisers to life.

A diverse range of projects are supported, with the Leopold Lakers Basketball Club among 11 Community Grant recipients in 2024.

The volunteer-run club used its grant to design and purchase new girls training tops and playing shorts, as it seeks to support and add to the 330-plus players that represent the Lakers weekly.

Leopold Lakers President Jayson Newman said the initiative was part of the club’s push to increase participation by women and to provide a supportive and inclusive environment.

“The feedback has been amazing. The players love the more comfortable and appropriate fit, and they also enjoy having a sponsor logo, like their idols at (WNBL team) Geelong United.

“We also used the (grant) to promote social inclusion and diversity, via our Indigenous designed and themed training tops.”

Geelong United stars, including captain Jaz Shelley and import Haley Jones, visited the Lakers this week to run a training clinic for more than 40 players.

Barwon Water General Manager Customers, Community and Strategy Laura Kendall said water played a vital role in helping keep basketballers hydrated and healthy, on and off the court.

“We provide grants to help community groups save water, and also to improve the environment, help people be active and foster social inclusion,” Ms Kendall said.

“We encourage eligible community groups, sports clubs, local associations and event organisers to consider applying.

“Supporting a range of community groups is one of many ways we’re helping our region to prosper economically, socially, culturally and environmentally.”

Barwon Water knows better outcomes result when it works in partnership with its customers, community and Traditional Owners.

Community Grant applications are being received until 31 March.

Barwon Water also offers grants for schools and businesses.
