A 59 kilometre underground pipeline linking Melbourne and Geelong's water supplies is part of our long term goal to secure the region's water supply into the future.
The pipeline plays a critical role in meeting the region's future water demand.
The project will deliver up to 16,000 million litres of water a year. This is equivalent to half of the region's current water usage.
The underground pipeline will link Geelong's storage basins at Lovely Banks with Melbourne's water supply network at Cowies Hill, west of Werribee.
The pipeline is expected to be completed in February 2012.
Following the awarding of material and construction contracts, pipeline construction is now underway, and is expected to be completed by February 2012.
The first section of the pipeline is being built in the road reserve adjacent to Peak School Road in Lara.
Barwon Water will continue to work closely with landowners, stakeholders and community interest groups for the life of the project.
Up to 60 people will be employed during the design phase and around 200 during construction. This doesn't include Barwon Water staff.
Jobs will also be created during the pipeline manufacturing process.
We'll continue to update this page throughout the life of the project.
Landowners, stakeholders and community interest groups will be informed directly.
