Throughout the Geelong, Colac and Otway regions, water is generally harvested by natural run-off into a reservoir located in mountain ranges. After leaving the catchment, it is conveyed via a system of channels and pipes to large storages. Following treatment to clean and disinfect the water, it continues its journey to basins and tanks located in elevated areas close to towns and cities. These provide the necessary pressure to transfer water to the customer. A network of pipes, totalling more than 3,100 kilometres, connects these service basins to customers. In the Barwon Water supply area, about 62 per cent of the 38,000 million litres of treated water we supply annually is used around the home. Industry uses 23 per cent and 15 per cent is supplied to commercial customers.
