The future of urban living is here - Sharland Oasis

Oasis Header

Sharland Oasis, the award-winning ecologically sustainable display home built by Barwon Water and industry partners in 2005, closed its doors in August 2006 as Barwon Water enters its research phase with Deakin University.

Sharland Oasis has been open to the public since April 2005, showcasing water and energy efficient materials, fittings and appliances.

From September, Sharland Oasis will enter the second phase of its life. Once occupied, the three-bedroom family home’s water and energy usage will be closely monitored to evaluate its environmental performance.

Deakin University’s School of Engineering and Technology will lead a project team to comprehensively monitor and report on all aspects of Sharland Oasis’ innovative features. Data will be collected on the quality and quantity of rainwater harvested and greywater collected, the amount and source of water (rainwater, greywater or reticulated water) used in the home and garden, and a detailed break-down of water consumption.

Every tap (hot and cold) is individually metered, along with the dishwasher, washing machine and toilets. The home also features a roof-mounted weather monitoring station.

Sharland Oasis boasts five rainwater tanks, a greywater recycling system, a gas-boosted solar hot water system, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and irrigation system complete with rain and moisture detectors. Barwon Water estimates the home has the potential to achieve savings of up to 80 percent on water and energy consumption.

Results from the 18–24 month research project will provide valuable input into future design and construction in an increasingly environmentally-conscious industry.

Sharland Oasis is located at 7 Lomandra Avenue Hamlyn Heights.
